CONCERT FAQ’s
- What is the purpose of Dance Sensation’s concert?
The concert is most of our student’s favourite time of the year! They showcase all they have learnt and how they have progressed in class by performing a routine. We value the opportunity to foster confidence, organisation skills, memory and teamwork in our students. They get to be part of a professional production with great lighting, costumes and stage production, all whilst having lots of fun! We know every student will shine on stage and every routine gets a huge round of applause from the encouraging family and friends in the audience!
- What happens in the lead up to the concert?
Students spend many weeks learning their routine in class and practicing at home. Their teachers ensure everyone feels confident and excited to be on stage! Near the end of Term 3 we begin fitting costumes in class, 2 weeks before the concert students take their costumes home ready for Photo day and they attend a rehearsal at the concert venue before WOWing audiences on stage!
- Who provides the costume?
We know life is fast paced and super busy…. so gone are the days of each parent sewing their child’s costume to the teacher’s exact specifications, or purchasing a brand new costume each year creating a cupboard full of once worn costumes at home! We provide all costumes ready-to-wear at an average cost of $40 per student. We take a small deposit to ensure the costume is returned the week after the concert – no sewing, washing or ironing required! The only items students need to provide are outlined in a note handed out with the costume e.g. dance shoes & tights.
- What is photo day?
Photo day is held at the Lane Cove Studio usually the Saturday before the concert. Classes are allocated a 20min timeslot to attend – Photo Day is essentially our Dress Rehearsal as well, it is our opportunity to practice the correct hair style, make up, tights and shoes for the concert.
Each student has a solo photo & class photo and we love seeing siblings have photos together! There is no charge to have your photo taken, at a later date the photo’s are presented and if you like what you see then you are welcome to purchase. It’s a great way to capture the gorgeous dancers, their costumes and big smiles! They will love to look back on the dance photos when they grow up.
- How do concert rehearsals work?
Classes are allocated a time either on the day or a night or two before the concert to rehearse on stage at The Centenary Centre, Ravenswood School, Gordon. Rehearsals are NOT dress rehearsals (*with the exception this year for Ermington students who will rehearse on the Sunday morning ready to perform), leave the costumes hanging at home and wear normal dance gear. This gives students a feel for the space, lighting and sound whilst parents have a practice go at finding the venue & parking.
- Can I purchase a DVD of the concert?
Yes! We employ an external company to provide a professional video of the concert along with close-ups and routine selection. It’s a great way to show relatives or friends who couldn’t attend the concert – we find our younger students have it on repeat for many months re-living their favourite night of the year!! It holds such precious memories that will last a lifetime.
- What happens on the day of the concert?
There are usually two concerts (allocation will be available in concert booklet). At the call up time students arrive in their costume with hair and makeup complete. At the end of the concert all students who have performed are also in the FINALE dance, to take a bow and join in award presentations.
- How many concerts am I in?
Younger children and those who only attend 1 class per week will be in one concert only. Many of the Teen, Adult & Performance Crew classes are often in multiple concerts.
- What kind of awards are given at the concert?
We LOVE giving out awards to congratulate dedicated, hardworking and positive students! We have many awards for students who have danced with us for 5yrs, 10yrs,15yrs or 20yrs, dedication medals and an award for one student in each age group who has persistently showed the DS spirit (this comes with a free term of dance). Our biggest award is the SCHOLARSHIP which students audition for and the winner receives a free YEAR of dance in as many styles as they choose! Many of our older students (and teachers) proudly display their trophies and medals from their years at Dance Sensation ☺ how cool!
- What do the remaining weeks of Term 4 look like once the concert is over?
Term 4 is always jam-packed with FUN and plenty to look forward to! Classes run as normal so don’t miss out! Dance Achievement Levels and Tap Exams, which students have been working towards all year, will be scheduled. Each week after the concert is a different theme in our studios -everyone dresses up whilst music and routines are adapted to the theme too! Previous years themes have included; Retro Disco, Disney and Beach Week. Week 9 is PARTY WEEK! An end of year celebration with your dance friends and teachers (games, competitions and prizes of course!).
Exact dates, times and costume info are given out in Term 3 each year. If you have any more questions regarding our concert please email: admin@dancesensation.com.au
